While growing up in his native Brooklyn, N.Y., Olsen dreamed of flying in space as he watched the Apollo astronauts explore the moon. He pursued a career as a scientist and eventually grew wealthy as co-founder of the high-tech ventures EPITAXX Inc., a microcircuits firm, and Sensors Unlimited Inc., which developed optical equipment used aboard satellites.
When he learned of Space Adventures, the Arlington, Va., company that arranged flights for Tito and Shuttleworth, Olsen grew determined to pursue a trip. However, the training was interrupted by an undisclosed medical problem he eventually overcame.
