For the time being, Olsen is content plugging Space Adventures, the Arlington, Va., firm that arranged for his flight into space. "Space Adventures got me here, so the least I could do is pay them back and promote them," Olsen said while meeting with reporters privately for 30-minute interviews in a plush, wood-paneled club room, some 20 floors below an apartment he owns overlooking Central Park. Olsen, a man with chiseled good looks and short gray hair, who is 6 feet 1 inch tall and 175 pounds, holds master's degrees in physics and material science. He insisted he did not set out to become a space cowboy on an overpriced -- and dangerous -- joy ride.
